Scholarship opportunities
The New South Institute is pleased to offer scholarships and bursaries for Master’s and PhD students committed to research in public administration. These awards are designed to support scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds, in line with NSI’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community.
Awards Overview: Our scholarships and bursaries offer flexible financial support tailored to the specific needs of each scholar and the availability of NSI resources. Support can range from full coverage, including tuition fees, living expenses and academic materials, to partial support focused on specific areas of need. This flexible approach underlines our commitment to removing financial barriers for scholars, allowing them to focus on their research and professional development. Each application is assessed individually to ensure that the support offered is appropriate to the scholar’s circumstances and NSI’s ability to assist.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Admission to a Master’s or PhD programme in public administration or related fields at an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated financial need.
- A track record of academic excellence.
- Commitment to the NSI’s mission to improve public administration.

- A detailed curriculum vitae (CV).
- A cover letter explaining your research interests, alignment with NSI’s mission, and your financial need.
- A writing sample demonstrating your academic research skills.
- Proof of acceptance by the academic institution.
- A budget outlining the estimated expenses you will incur for the duration of the programme.
- Academic transcripts or other evidence of academic excellence.
Selection Process: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by a committee dedicated to identifying scholars who not only meet the eligibility criteria, but also demonstrate a strong potential to contribute to the field of public administration. Consideration will be given to the applicant’s financial need, academic record and the potential impact of their research.
Support and Expectations: Selected scholars will receive financial support tailored to their individual needs and NSI’s resource availability. This support may cover a range of expenses, including but not limited to tuition fees, a monthly stipend for living expenses, and funds for academic materials, depending on the scholar’s specific situation and the extent of NSI’s funding capabilities. In exchange, scholars are expected to uphold high academic standards and actively engage in research activities aligned with NSI’s mission. Our goal is to foster a mutually beneficial relationship where scholars are empowered to pursue their academic endeavors without financial constraints, while contributing valuable insights to the public administration field.
