The idea of South Africa is blowing in the wind – we are in the middle of an epochal change

In an article published in the Daily Maverick newspaper, Ivor Chipkin argues that South Africa finds itself in a time change – with the advance of nationalist ideas masquerading as anti-imperialism, but which resonate with the exclusionary nationalisms of late 19th century Europe. Snehor Chipkin highlights that this is a moment of crisis for the country, with growing sectors of the political system repudiating constitutional democracy. In his assessment, the country needs again to push against the nationalist winds in support of the normative values of a constitutional state.
