NSI co-hosts global seminar on State Capture and Institutional Reform

The New South Institute is co-organising an upcoming public discussion titled “Global Lessons on State Capture: Rebuilding Public Institutions”, taking place on Wednesday, 18 June 2025 at 6:30 PM. The event will be held at the GIBS Auditorium, 26 Melville Road, Illovo, Johannesburg.

The seminar will explore how international experiences of state capture can inform policy strategies for institutional reform. The discussion will begin from a global perspective before focusing on the South African context, including lessons drawn from the country’s own response to state capture and its enduring consequences.

The programme features contributions from several experts working at the intersection of governance, anti-corruption, and institutional accountability. Among the speakers is Dr Ivor Chipkin, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the New South Institute, who will offer insights into the institutional legacy of state capture in South Africa and its relevance internationally.

Other speakers include:

  • Daniel Kaufmann, Senior Fellow at Results for Development
  • Paul Pretorius, Lead Counsel to the Zondo Commission
  • Ferial Haffajee, Associate Editor at Daily Maverick
  • Zodwa Xesibe, Special Investigating Unit
