NSI receives Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status
The New South Institute (NSI) has been granted Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status by the South African Revenue Service (SARS), effective 1 March 2022.
This designation recognises that NSI operates in the public interest, as defined in section 30 of the Income Tax Act. As a result, NSI is now exempt from income tax under section 10(1)(cN), and may receive donations that are tax-deductible for donors, in terms of section 18A of the Act, effective 10 April 2025.
This status is significant for a research organisation such as NSI. It enables a broader range of partnerships with individuals, foundations and public or private institutions seeking to support work in the public interest. It also aligns with NSI’s activities, including independent research and the provision of bursaries and academic support, both of which fall within the categories of public benefit activities recognised by SARS.
PBO status also affirms NSI’s role as a non-profit institution dedicated to advancing public knowledge, policy innovation and institutional development in South Africa and the broader region.
