Authored by Victor Amadi, the report provides an in-depth examination of Nigeria’s migration policies and their impacts both regionally and nationally.

Victor Amadi, a researcher at the NSI, discussed the report’s findings in a series of interviews to enhance public understanding of the complex migration dynamics within Nigeria. On April 30, 2024, Amadi was featured on Newzroom Afrika in an interview with Stephen Grootes, where he offered a detailed unpacking of the migration trends that are shaping not only Nigeria, but also the broader African continent:

• Significant movement: Nigeria has seen a significant increase in both emigration and immigration, influencing migration patterns across Africa.

• Current numbers: By 2020, Nigeria will host about 1.3 million immigrants, while about 1.6 million Nigerians have moved to other countries, mostly within the West African sub-region.

• Intra-regional movement: Most Nigerian emigrants remain within West Africa, favoring countries such as Benin Republic, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting historical and regional ties.

• Migration to the West: A significant number of Nigerians are moving to Western countries in search of better opportunities and education.

• Economic and Security Challenges: Factors such as unemployment and security issues are causing more Nigerians to emigrate.

• Government response: Efforts are underway to effectively manage migration, with a focus on formalizing movement channels and raising awareness of irregular migration.

The same day, Victor Amadi also appeared on CapeTalk radio’s program “Views and News with Clarence Ford,” where he continued to elucidate the complexities of migration dynamics and reform efforts in Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies. These media appearances provided a platform for a broader discussion on how migration can be managed to leverage economic and regional development effectively.
