The NSI, in partnership with Defend Our Democracy, will host a virtual briefing session aimed at engaging civil society in the ongoing amendments to the Public Service Act. This important event, titled “Empowering Civil Society to Lead Public Service Reform,” is scheduled for Monday, 29 July 2024, at 15:00.

Event Overview: The discussion seeks to unpack the intricacies of the Public Service Act and explore current initiatives aimed at its amendment. Emphasizing the critical role of civil society in these reforms, the event will highlight why these changes are essential for strengthening democratic governance and improving public service delivery.

Speakers:

  1. Ivor Chipkin, Director of the New South Institute and an eminent scholar in government and performance in South Africa, will provide historical and political context to the ongoing reforms.
  2. Yoliswa Makhasi, Director General of the Department of Public Service and Administration, will deliver an overview of current initiatives, focusing particularly on the amendment to the Public Service Act.
  3. Neeshan Balton, Executive Director at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, will facilitate the discussion.
