Unpacking the Shadow State — A book talk on state capture and accountability
The New South Institute (NSI) invites you to a public discussion and book talk on corruption and reform, tracing the emergence of patterns of state capture, examining what sustains them, and exploring what is required to rebuild ethical and accountable public institutions.
Drawing on two influential works that examine the formation of a ‘shadow state’, the discussion will consider how networks of patronage, violence and informal power have shaped South Africa’s institutions and undermined public accountability. The discussion will also consider the personal and professional risks faced by individuals who expose wrongdoing and explore ways in which South Africa can better protect and support whistleblowers.
