Alan Hirsch, Head of the Migration Governance Reform Programme at the New South Institute, spoke on HOT Business, on HOT 102.7FM, on 13 October 2026 about the Building Shared Prosperity in South Africa blog series, which he writes with Brian Levy.

In the interview, he describes unemployment as a mix of policy failure and an economy whose rules suit a richer country more than a developing one. He sees signs of improvement in governance and in macroeconomic policy, and says the series will set out where growth and jobs can come from. His three steps are faster growth in the formal sector, a better environment for the informal sector, and the use of digital tools by small businesses and sole entrepreneurs.
