Youth unemployment and public sector renewal in South Africa: Yoliswa Makhasi featured on eNCA’s Checkpoint
The New South Institute (NSI) was featured in the Checkpoint documentary titled Youth Employment, aired on 25 June 2025 by eNCA.
Yoliswa Makhasi, NSI Research Fellow and Head of the Public Service Reform Programme, contributed to the programme with findings from NSI’s recent report on the aging public sector and the need for generational renewal within government institutions.
The episode explores the lived experiences of South Africa’s unemployed graduates and the structural barriers they face in securing work, even with formal qualifications. It examines the growing disconnect between tertiary education and labour market absorption, and considers the capacity of state institutions to offer meaningful employment pathways to young people.
Makhasi highlights the demographic challenges facing public institutions, noting that “60% of teachers are over 50” and that the average age of lower management in the police service is also 50 – underscoring the urgency of recruiting and training younger professionals to ensure continuity and sustainability in service delivery.
