Virtual book launch: Beyond Mimicry: The Potential of African Endogenous Governance Systems
On Wednesday, 26 November 2025, the New South Institute (NSI), in partnership with Afrospectives, will host a virtual discussion on ‘The Stakes and Challenges of Revalorising African Endogenous Systems of Governance and Justice’.
This webinar will celebrate the publication of Beyond Mimicry: The Potential of African Endogenous Governance Systems, edited by Professors Ali Moussa Iye and Augustin F. C. Holl, and released by De Gruyter as part of their “Re-imagining Public Governance” series.
Speakers will discuss how African endogenous governance and justice systems could inform contemporary governance reform. They will also discuss how traditional philosophies and practices might address governance crises across the continent, as well as the practical challenges of incorporating these approaches into existing political and legal frameworks.
Speakers will include Ivor Chipkin (Director of the NSI); Lisa Aubrey (Associate Professor of African and African-American Studies and Political Science at Afrospectives); Professor Augustin F. C. Holl (Archaeologist and Vice-Chair of Afrospectives); Dr Ali Moussa Iye (Political Anthropologist and Chair of Afrospectives); and Professor Benon Basheka (Professor of Governance).
Researchers, students, policymakers, civil society actors, and anyone else interested in governance, justice systems, and African political thought are invited to attend.
