Interview with Alan Hirsch on Cape Talk Radio
On June 19, 2024, the day President Cyril Ramaphosa began his new term in office, Alan Hirsch, a Research Fellow at the New South Institute (NSI) and leader of the Migration Governance Reform Program, as well as a professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at UCT, shared his insights in an interview with John Matherman on Cape Talk Radio.
Hirsch emphasized the importance of the formation and functionality of the government of national unity. He noted that, while it is challenging to predict the success of the new government, there is a significant commitment from the major parties, the ANC and the DA, to collaborate effectively. Hirsch stressed the need for genuine consultation and highlighted the importance of the government avoiding prolonged delays in announcing the new cabinet to maintain public confidence.
Addressing the ideological differences between the ANC and the DA, Hirsch pointed out that despite their divergent public stances, their policies show more alignment than commonly perceived. He highlighted three critical areas where cooperation is essential: black economic empowerment, national health insurance, and the management of state-owned enterprises. Hirsch underscored the need for expert engagement and thorough discussions to bridge differences and develop effective policies.
During the interview, Hirsch also mentioned an article he authored on News24, which prompted the conversation. In the article, he argues the importance of moving beyond ideological divides in critical areas. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of strong leadership, trust-building, and thoughtful decision-making processes to ensure the stability and success of the government of national unity.
