As a fiercely independent institution, we are committed to delivering high-quality, fact-based analysis and pragmatic policy solutions that drive meaningful change. Home to some of South Africa’s leading scholars, public intellectuals, and former senior government officials, we are at the forefront of critical policy debates shaping the nation and beyond.

Now, we are inviting experienced and driven journalists to join us in this mission through our Journalist-in-Residence Programme. This unique opportunity is designed for storytellers who can bring governance and public policy to life through investigative research, sharp analysis, and compelling narratives. If you are passionate about uncovering the nuances of governance and reform, this programme will provide the platform, resources, and expertise to elevate your reporting.

Successful candidates will produce in-depth content for both print and online platforms, covering institutional stories that align with the NSI’s mission. Successful candidates will produce content for both print and online platforms. The NSI will fully cover travel expenses, and remuneration will be provided per published piece.

Who should apply?

We are looking for journalists who:

– Hold a relevant diploma or degree in journalism or a related field.
– Have at least five years of experience in journalism.
– Possess a strong portfolio of published work.
– Have a deep understanding of governance, policy, and public administration.
– Demonstrate the ability to break high-impact stories and simplify complex issues with clarity.
– Are proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to journalistic excellence.

Key responsibilities

– Identify and pitch critical institutional issues, translating data and research into engaging, high-impact stories.
– Collaborate with experts and stakeholders to produce insightful reports on governance and policy matters.
– Stay ahead of emerging policy debates by engaging with both local and global news ecosystems.
– Conduct field reporting, including interviews with communities and key decision-makers.
– Maintain the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity.
