We are pleased to announce the release of the New South Institute’s (NSI) Annual Report for 2023. This comprehensive report provides an in-depth look at our activities, research, and impact over the past year. As we continue to address complex issues related to governance, public administration, migration, and welfare reform, this report highlights our commitment to building effective democracies in the Global South.

Key highlights from the report

Public service reform: One of our major focus areas has been the professionalization of public service. This year, our efforts contributed to significant developments, including the adoption of the Public Service Amendment Bill in South Africa. This bill aims to shift power from politicians to senior public officials, enhancing the efficiency and integrity of public administration.

Migration governance: Our Migration Governance Reform program (MIGRA) has produced insightful research on trends and patterns in African migration. The report, “Framing a Study of African Migration Governance Reform – Towards Freer Movement,” offers practical solutions for improving migration management across the continent.

South-South dialogues: NSI continues to foster collaboration and dialogue among countries in the Global South. Our discussions on the Non-Aligned Movement and the politics of self-determination provide valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing these nations.

Combating state capture: We have been actively involved in addressing and preventing state capture. Our participation in the Global Programme on Measuring Corruption underscores our commitment to protecting institutions from corruption and enhancing transparency.

Looking ahead

As we move into 2024, a year marked by significant political events including the elections in South Africa, the NSI is poised to make substantial contributions to shaping the future of governance in the Global South. We will continue our active participation in international events, expand our Migration Governance Reform program with new reports, and maintain a strong presence in the media. Our focus will be on furthering public administration reform, providing actionable insights on migration trends, and advocating for comprehensive welfare reforms to address socio-economic inequalities. This pivotal year will see us engaging even more actively with political leaders, civil society, and international partners to drive positive change and support democratic processes.
